Follow Your Dreams

Word Count:404

My belief to always follow my dream was inspired from my brother. My brother became grateful for life at a young age. Faced with illness his whole childhood made him realize how short life is and to always follow your dreams. I didn’t come to appreciate this quality of my brother until I got older. When I was younger I always thought he was just trying to be different and didn’t really understand him. As I got older I realized he was simply just following his dreams not letting the opinions of other people effect what he wanted to do. From before I can remember my brother always wanted to be a marine biologist. As he got older and it became time for him to make a college decision it was an easy choice to go to school in Florida. Most people were telling him marine biology is not something you can make a career out of but he didn’t seem to care what they thought. Not only was he going to major in marine biology with not much support he also was going to a new state where he knew no one.

The reason I admire my brother so much is because I could never do what he did. I don’t think I would have had the courage at that young age to go to a state so far away with no friends. I have learned from my brother to not be afraid to take chances, follow my dreams and not worry about what other people think ,or what can go wrong. Half way through college he decided he wanted to be a writer and while at University Tampa he decided to major in both English and marine biology. During summers he was literally living the dream, spending his summer break sailing from Hawaii to California doing scientific research and one summer on a boat in Key West. After college he followed his dream of being writer which led him to graduate school at American University for English. This is just inspiration for me to follow my dreams even if its hard path. At times I feel like just taking the easy way and not going after my dreams because the path seems to hard. My brother has showed me that if you just take a chance and go after your dreams you have nothing to lose and might just live your dream.

That's so cool that you have someone to look up to who didn't do what he was "supposed" to do. I guess deciding to do your own thing means really having confidence in oneself that you can follow your dreams if you just believe.

I really like your essay. However, the only suggestion I have is that you say your brother was faced with illness his whole childhood, but you didn't specify whether it was an ongoing ilness or if he had a bunch of colds.

Sometimes it is hard to take risks and having someone to look up to that has gone through that really inspires you to choose your own path and actually take those risks to get there.

This is a very interesting essay, but the only complaint I have is asking myself, what is your brothers illness...maybe it is too personal to put in, but it would be nie information to have.

That's strange that people were telling your brother that he couldn't make a career out of studying marine biology. I always thought that was something a lot of people wanted to be. Also, you never said what exactly you mean when you said your brother faced a childhood illness.

Your right you can't let anyone affect the choice you make when it comes to your dreams. in the long run they are ot the ones that are going to live your life you are. If you decide to do something based on someone else then your life is going to miserable and your are not going to enjoy life at all.

I really liked your essay. I have taken inspiration from many places but I'm an only child so I do not know what its like to have a brother. Taking risks is a big part of having success.
