Just Do It….or…Just Buy More Nike

Portland, Oregon is home to the worlds leading sportswear and equipment provider, Nike. Nike holds a reputation for providing the best sports gear on the market. It all starts with their name while most people automatically assign the name Nike with sports it actually originates from a Greek goddess. Nike is the Greek goddess of victory, by naming their company this Nike was saying that if you wear Nike you will be victorious in whatever sport you’re playing. What makes Nike is their loyal base of customers.

In the athletic world Nike is number one over any other brand on the market. Being an athlete I’ve tried every sports brand and Nike hands down is the best product in my personal opinion and is the same for other athletes I have been in contact with. Many athletes refuse to wear anything other then Nike shoes or cleats. Some athletes even wont wear anything other then Nike socks showing how much that little black check represents. In the world of sports if your wearing some no name brand athletic equipment your going to be looked down on. If you wear Nike you will automatically be associated with the best even if you’re not the best athlete. Nike was smart enough of a company to know to get the best athletes to endorse their company to expand their market. The biggest endorser that comes to mind is Michael Jordan or as Nike deemed him “AIR Jordan”. After Nike endorsed Michael Jordan the market for his shoes went of the charts. During this time when they launched the air Jordan’s every basketball fan wanted to be Michael Jordan. Nike knew this so well that their commercial’s song lyrics were “I Want to be like Mike”. After these commercial showing MJ with his Nike Air Jordan’s dunking from the foul line every basketball fan in America wanted them.

This led to even more top athletes endorsing this brand. As soon as you get big time athletes to endorse your brand there’s no looking back. These athletes are role models to millions of kids which opens the market for Nike. Kids all around the world see their favorite basketball, baseball, golf, football, lacrosse, soccer, player wearing Nike then they’ve got to have it. Parents will buy their kids anything these days and Nike is the number one brand. They think if they wear Nike their going to play like the pro’s or at least look like them. Nike is a truly iconic brand dominating the sportswear and equipment market. What sets Nike apart is that they are not just a name associated with sports but a name associated with the best sports products.

I agree. Nike has built a strong image for their products. Jumping on Michael Jordan was definitely a great marketing move on their part and played off his superstar performances to sell more products. Kids want to be pros and Nike makes them think buying their products will make them closer to accomplishing their goals.

I definately am attracted to title because that is exactly how nike portrays its logo to be. Nike tends to attract many of their consumers by sponsoring the top athletes in every sport (Lebron James)so that many little lebrons would want to be exaclty like him.

I am actually a huge fan of Nike also, not that I care about shoes that much, I just love the story. The Bill Bowerman, the track coach at Oregon started making lightweight shoes for his runners using a waffle iron is just astonishing. To think, one of the biggest companies in the world started in someone's garage.
Nike has always been that way, on the razor's edge of innovation. They always had great marketing campagins from Air Jordan to Charles Barkley's "I am not a role model." They had and have most every demographic covered. Though I do sometimes wonder, how did they know to pick Michael Jordan? Was it just because he could perform elecrifying dunks, because a lot of players can do that and I wouldn't buy their shoes. Jordan wasn't supposed to be the greatest ever, so did they just take a wild guess? I sitll do not understand how they did that. Wait, maybe its the shoes.

I have to agree with you when you say Nike symbolizes the best in sports. I didn't know the name came from Greek mythology. That really helps with the image Nike tries to portray. When I go shopping for sporting goods, no matter the price, I'm still partial to the brand.

You did a good job portraying how Nike is associated with basketball and how they came to become an icon by using Michael Jordan and other athletes. I agree, people do buy Nike, just because it is Nike. In your last paragraph you mentioned other sports that are also associated with Nike. It would have been nice to see how Nike branched out to other sports as well and how they formed this association with sports other than basketball.
